Random name picker for the classroom

Calling on students fairly is hard to do from memory. The Randomizer is a free random student picker that turns "who's next?" into a moment the whole class watches. Paste your class list once, then let a bird pick, or race the names as turtles, horses, dogs or birds.

Why pick students at random?

Random selection keeps everyone ready, because anyone could be next, and it takes the pressure off you to choose. Students also see the pick as fair. They can't argue with a turtle that crosses the finish line first.

How to use it in class

  1. Paste your class list on the classroom computer or smartboard. It's saved in that browser, so it's still there next lesson.
  2. Choose a mode. The bird is quick for "who answers next?", and the turtle or horse race builds suspense for bigger moments.
  3. Set the time with the seconds slider: 3 seconds for a quick pick, 15 to 30 for a dramatic reveal.
  4. Make sure everyone gets a turn: turn on Remove winner from list, and each picked student drops off until the whole class has had a go.

Questions

Do students need an account?

No. Nobody signs up. Open the page on the classroom computer or smartboard, paste the class list and start.

Will my class list be saved?

Yes, on that device. The list is kept in the browser, so it is still there the next lesson. It is never uploaded to our server.

How do I make sure everyone gets a turn?

Turn on "Remove winner from list". Each student who is picked drops off the list until everyone has had a turn, then paste the full list back in.
